This illustration is one of my artworks from my direct study. In this piece, I nod to Fortunio Liceti's Monsters. De Monstris is a series of illustrations depicting deformities, mermaids and other natural wonders/errors. Liceti's illustrations were both influential and prototypical by showing what 1600s Europe referred to as "freaks" in a more artistic, admirable way.
When pursuing my minor in Illustration at UMass Dartmouth, I took on an independent study with the help of Professor Bruce Maddocks. For this direct study, I created a series of illustrations of which paid homage to artworks of the past.
Final sketch!
After finding a concept I liked, I went took my idea into procreate and illustrated my final piece.
